- Animated Dreams
Japanese Indie Animation
Japanese Indie Animation is this year's Animated Dreams main focus programme and is mostly compiled of works by Japan’s contemporary solo artists and directors who are considered part of the Japanese "third wave" of indie animation. On the other hand, the Japan-themed night programme “Love, Sex and Desire: Erotic Japanese Indie Animation” boasts some exclusive works from the 1960s, some with quite a psychedelic tinge.
Besides the above-mentioned night programme, the Japanese focus features a solo film-maker programme presented by CALF, Japan’s independent animation organization.
Also, the Japan programme features two contemporary animation programmes that are like yin and yang (or in and yo in Japanese).
The first of the latter - "Fantasy and Fanfares" - spotlights Japan as the land of sunrise, a place of a ritual celebration of life in all its colours and imagination, delicacy and lightness of being.
The second indie programme - "Mystery and Metamorphoses" - is more abstract, primeval and powerful. One programme wears optimism like a light summer dress; the second one feels heavier and more complicated, seeping into the subconscious through metamorphosis – the part of the persona that can only be fathomed at a deeper level.
